Washington, DC—Smart Approaches to Marijuana (SAM) applauds the House Appropriations Committee for passing landmark anti-marijuana legislation in its Fiscal Year 2027 Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies appropriations bill. The package prohibits the Department of Justice from rescheduling marijuana and includes report language demanding enforcement of the 2025 ban on intoxicating hemp. The Committee also advanced report language that orders the DOJ to investigate financial services being offered to marijuana businesses run by the Chinese Communist Party.
“By including this language in their bill, the House Appropriations Committee is demonstrating real leadership in advancing a drug policy that prioritizes Americans’ public health and national security,” said SAM CEO Dr. Kevin A. Sabet. “Congress recognizes that rescheduling will harm our country by giving the marijuana industry a multi-billion dollar tax break. The Committee is also right to demand a crackdown on dangerous hemp-derived THC products sold nationwide. For too long, American public safety and health have been compromised because of the 2018 Farm Bill loophole that flooded gas stations, smoke shops, and the internet with intoxicating hemp products that get kids high and send people to the ER. Meanwhile, CCP-affiliated criminal groups have taken control of the legal markets that activists claimed would wipe out all black markets. This bill takes real action to right these wrongs and help safeguard American citizens.”
