SAM Applauds Governor DeWine’s Executive Order to Ban Intoxicating Hemp Products, Calls for Full Legislative Ban of THC Products in Ohio

COLUMBUS—Smart Approaches to Marijuana (SAM) President and CEO Dr. Kevin Sabet applauds Ohio Governor Mike DeWine’s executive order banning intoxicating hemp products.

“Banning dangerous and addictive drugs marketed to kids is a public health non-negotiable,” said Sabet. “Intoxicating hemp products were putting kids across Ohio in danger for years before Governor DeWine stepped up to ban them. State poison-control data show THC exposures among kids under five have jumped more than tenfold since 2018, thanks to the intoxicating hemp industry.

“This is how elected officials should act: putting the health and safety of their constituents above politics.

“Ohio’s lawmakers must now follow the governor’s lead and enact a full legislative ban of hemp products. Anything less will mean capitulating to the interests of an addiction industry at the expense of public health and safety for families all across Ohio. Crises demand bold action; kudos to the governor—and we hope the legislature will do what is necessary and proper here.”
