STATEMENT FROM SMART APPROACHES TO MARIJUANA IN RESPONSE TO THE BIDEN ADMINISTRATION’S SAP IN OPPOSITION TO THE BAN ON THC TESTING IN THE MILITARY

Banning Marijuana Testing Reduces Military Readiness, Risks Service Members Health and Safety

(WASHINGTON, DC) – Smart Approaches to Marijuana (SAM) President Dr. Kevin Sabet, a former White House drug policy advisor to Presidents Obama, Bush and Clinton, issued the following statement today in response to the Biden Administration’s Statement of Administration Policy (SAP) in opposition to the ban on THC testing in the military, which is currently included in the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA):

“President Biden is right on this: today’s high-potency THC presents a significant safety concern, posing risks to both public health and military readiness. We know that high-potency marijuana is linked to lower IQ, psychosis, depression, suicidality, motor impairment, and schizophrenia. Today’s SAP is a step in the right direction on marijuana policy. We hope legislators will follow suit and strip this provision from the bill. SAM is proud to have played a central role in advocating against adding this provision to this year’s NDAA.”
