SAM: BAN ON THC DRUGS WILL BE A WIN FOR PUBLIC HEALTH AND SAFETY

SAM Applauds the Texas State Senate, House for Passing Critical Reforms to Eliminate Hemp-Derived THC Drug Products

(AUSTIN, TX) – Smart Approaches to Marijuana (SAM) President Dr. Kevin Sabet, a former three-time White House drug policy advisor, released the following statement upon the Texas House of Representative’s passage of SB3, which would prohibit sales of hemp-derived THC drug products:

“Texans should be proud of their lawmakers for putting public health and safety first by eradicating hemp-derived THC drugs from the state. THC drug products—like kid-friendly candies, sodas, vapes and other products—have been disastrous for health and safety, especially for young people. While Congress continues to fail to address the THC loophole it created in the 2018 Farm Bill, lawmakers like State Senator Charles Perry (R-28) and Lt. Governor Dan Patrick are wisely moving to address this issue at the state level. The members of the Texas Senate and House of Representatives should be applauded for their passage of this important legislation.

“According to the FDA, Delta-8 THC use is known to cause hallucinations, vomiting, tremors, anxiety, dizziness, confusion, and loss of consciousness and a NIH-sponsored survey showed that 11% of high school seniors used Delta-8 THC in 2023.  As each day passes, more and more young people are being put at risk. The time is now to take a stand against this multi-billion-dollar industry that is profiting off dangerous drug with serious long-term health consequences. I urge Governor Abbott to sign this important legislation.”
