SB478 Risks Public Health and Safety By Legalizing, Normalizing Dangerous THC Drugs
(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) – Smart Approaches to Marijuana (SAM) President Dr. Kevin Sabet, a former three-time White House drug policy advisor, is imploring Governor Mike Braun and members of the Indiana General Assembly to reject efforts create a legal marketplace for hemp-derived THC drug products and to instead advance a complete ban:
“Since Congress inadvertently legalized hemp-derived THC drugs in the 2018 Farm Bill, the addiction industry has been preying on Americans with dangerous, psychoactive drugs in gas stations, malls, and convenience stores. People across Indiana have seen the devastating results, especially for young people. Regrettably, the Legislature has put forward an ill-conceived proposal that would only worsen this crisis by normalizing and legitimizing these drugs in the eyes of the public. Governor Braun should reject any efforts to the legalize these dangerous, psychoactive drugs and urge the Legislature to advance a full ban of all hemp-derived THC drug products, which have the same risks as marijuana and other THC-laced drugs.
“According to the FDA, Delta-8 THC use is known to cause hallucinations, vomiting, tremors, anxiety, dizziness, confusion, and loss of consciousness. Despite these dangers, many parents aren’t fully aware of the risks because of the industry’s aggressive misinformation campaign. Lawmakers – both state and federal– should heed the pleas of parents, law enforcement and medical professionals, and begin advancing legislation that fully bans these dangerous drugs.”
