Statement from Dr. Kevin Sabet on President Donald Trump’s Nomination of Sara Carter as ONDCP Director
(WASHINGTON, DC) – Today, the Trump Administration announced that Sara Carter will be nominated to lead the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP). Dr. Kevin Sabet, co-founder and president of Smart Approaches to Marijuana (SAM) and a former senior drug policy advisor to the Obama Administration released the following statement congratulating Ms. Carter on her nomination:
“Sara Carter has researched and written about drug policy for years, and will be an excellent choice to lead the Office of National Drug Control Policy. Ms. Carter knows well the destruction drugs and their consequences place on individuals, families, communities, and society at large. As a mother of six, she surely understands the issues of prevention and education.
“We hope Ms. Carter will focus primarily on prevention, treatment, and recovery, and recognize the role today’s highly potent marijuana is playing in the destruction of young minds. We also hope she understands how bad policies like Measure 110 in Oregon helped embrace continued drug use versus policies that embrace hope and recovery.
“Further, it was refreshing to see Ms. Carter’s reporting on issues as varied as transnational drug cartels to foreign-involved underground marijuana operations, representing her breadth of familiarity on these issues.
“While we are pleased with the nominee to lead the ONDCP, we would like the office to be elevated to a Cabinet-level position. We will continue to call on the Trump Administration to re-elevate the ONDCP to Cabinet-level, especially as our nation is in the midst of an addiction crisis.”
