Vice President Kamala Harris, with the help of rapper of Fat Joe, held a conversation on marijuana reform at the White House.
“When the Vice President calls me, I stop everything,” said Fat Joe.
Harris hosted the roundtable to highlight the administration’s efforts to free individuals jailed for nonviolent marijuana possession and expand opportunities once they are released.
“We have now and recently announced making small business administration loans available to the previously incarcerated individuals,” said Harris.
Kevin Sabet is the founder of Smart Approaches to Marijuana, and a former drug policy expert for the Clinton and Obama administrations.
He says descheduling or legalizing marijuana is unlikely, and he says it’s not consistent with the president’s stance.
“He’s also made clear in his actions and words that he doesn’t want to legalize marijuana either,” said Sabet.
In August, the Department of Health and Human Services recommended that the Department of Justice reclassify marijuana.
