Washington, DC—Smart Approaches to Marijuana (SAM) condemns the Trump Administration’s recent cuts to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s grants to vital prevention and recovery organizations that are doing effective anti-drug work.
“SAMHSA grants to prevention, recovery, and related organizations play a crucial role in stopping the demand for dangerous drugs and addiction. This work literally saves lives,” said SAM CEO Kevin A. Sabet. “These cuts will hurt families and communities across the nation by ending services desperately needed by those seeking recovery and erode America’s overall public health by doing so. The move also reveals once more the troubling incoherence in the administration’s overall approach to our addiction crisis. What sense does it make to use force against international flows of fentanyl and cocaine while hollowing out key addiction prevention efforts here at home? This is a bleak day for American public health and for the courageous people working on its front lines.”
