‘What we need is less drug use’

We appreciate your letters of support which — like this one that arrived today from Joyce Morris in Colorado — encourage and energize(!) our volunteers. We invite you to contact us — and to support SAM.

Subject: Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

It is so wonderful to find a voice of reason and sensibility. I live in Colorado and was outraged and disappointed by the vote for Amendment 64. When the MMJ shops first started popping up, I, like so many others, thought that if they helped people suffering with debilitaing illnesses, why not? But the abuse became obvious. People were getting cards for whatever ailed them. I heard one 40-something, able-bodied man, (a card holder) state, he didn’t give a sh*! about medical marijuana. He was doing what he had to do to get it legalized.

I started to see that the MMJ dispensaries were the foot in the door for acceptance before the push for the bigger agenda, legalization.

I began smelling marijuana outdoors in public places: in Denver, at an outdoor event, at a local seasonal ice cream stand, while walking on the sidewalk from a passing vehicle, while riding my bike along a Colorado Springs bike path — just to name a few. Now that 64 has passed, I fear what spring and summer will be like.

For those who say the war on drugs failed, then it has failed not only on marijuana but on prescription drugs, on cocaine, on meth and on heroin. We certainly don’t think it’s a good idea to legalize them.

What we need is less drug use. To call marijuana organic and use words like “health” and “wellness” gives our children the wrong idea. Getting high is NOT about being healthy or about wellness. It is about being under the influence!

I am extremely thankful for the very important work you’re doing.

With hope for a smarter tomorrow,

Joyce Morris, Colorado
